Check engine light on a 2000 Hyundai accent?
Nothing... absolutely nothing should turn the engine light on unless there is a problem. Lets see. It could start with a loose gas cap. Because of environmental regulations, every manufacturer has to put this warning in place. Now... let us see if we really have a problem. Power steering and brake fluid would never trigger a check engine light on. So..... this comes out of our equation. Followings are potential problems, concerns or suggestions:
1) If the engine %26amp; transmission are performing as usual and have no abnormalities, I would just recommend you to drive it until you get back home. Check all the fluids just to be on a safe side.
2) If the check engine light is flashing while engine is running, I would advise you to pull over and have it towed (I don't think is your case because you've mentioned the car is running OK);
3) Might be a bad sensor that is defaulting to shorted and/or bad circuit. Worse case scenario, with a bad sensor you might have a bit more fuel consumption. So be it.
As you've described the situation, I would not be worried. Just drive the car back home and have it fixed. If the car is still under the warranty blanket...even better. Get Hyundai to take care of it. Won't cost you anything.
Should you still feel uncomfortable, get the vehicle to the closest shop and pull the fault codes out. Once you have those, it will be easier to know where are you standing with the problem.
Hope this will help. I'm giving you this advise based on passed experience with HYUNDAI as Service Manager. Have seen a lot.

Your light could mean Absolutely anything. It can mean that you have a miss fire that is not always noticeable because your computer will compensate to make it work the best it can. rough idling can be caused by a bad fuel filter, a bad spark plug, a miss fire, a bad air filter, or just bad fuel from a gas station.
