So about 3 months ago, i went to canadian tire and did a lot of services as in oil change, transmisiion fluid change, etc etc and ofcourse, differential fluid change.
4 Days ago, the rear tires kept locking as i would turn and make screeching noises. I goto canadian tire and ask them to take a look...the lady came back to me and asked %26quot;Sir, have u recently changed ur differential fluid?%26quot; and i said that i dont remember....and then she said %26quot;maybe the last place u changed ur differential fluid put in the wrong oil and is causing this, but we dont know exactly whats wrong unless we open it up%26quot;
So they opened it up and turns out the gears are broken and metal pieces ar everywhere. Apparently, the POSI-CARRIER exploded and the metal pieces when between the gears and broke them.
Keep in mind candian tire had replaced the differential oil about 3 months back. the car has 98,000 kms. My question is, could putting the wrong oil gradually destroy the differential?

In that amount of time, it is possible no oil was put back in it. Or not enough. You can request they have their claims adjuster come and take an oil sample. You may want to get a sample of your own and have it tested independently. They can tell how long it has been in there, and exactly what type and brand was used. You can look at it yourself too. If the metal is blue and glazed, it got extremely hot from being low on oil. If there are signs that it leaked out, they may be able to get around their mistake. If there are no signs of a long term leak, they will not have much choice but to own their mistake.

Changing fluid would NOT cause this kind of damage.
ADDED:
If the wrong fluid was put in it, it would cause premature wear on the ring and pinoin. But not cause it to break.
More than likely, someone drove it like an idiot doing %26quot;neutral drops%26quot;, or spinning %26quot;doughnuts%26quot; in your truck.
