My car recently began being very loud when its running?

Ok i have a mazda 626 1999, i do alot of driving but not tooo much. Recently when i start it and while its running, its just louder. It doesnt make any disitinct noise its just simply runs louder and it doesnt sound that good, the oil has been kept up with and changed yesterday. I changed the transmission fluid yesterday as well and it was overdue, it was actually brown like oil. The radiator fluid was also changed. It has always shaked a bit at times while im stopped and the other day i was at a drive through, holding the break (not in park) and it just shut off! so i turned the key, it didnt start, i put it in park and then it did start. One morning A while ago (like months so this may be unrelated) it wouldnt start and then after trying a few times, then waiting a minute it started. I got new spark plugs about a year ago when i had a belt replaced. I use 87 in gas, sometimes when i fill it up i do top it off. Does this sound familiar to anyone?? any ideas? thanks!

Jenna, it sounds like you have a few unrelated problems, the car getting just a bit louder is likely to turn out to be the flexible pipe in your exhaust that runs under your engine to absorb the engines vibrations. It weakens over time and likely needs to be replaced. The shaking at idle when stopped sounds like an ignition problem, is it worst when the weather is wet? Try plug wires and a cap and rotor if it has them. The no start at times is likely either the neutral safety switch or the starter, the next time it happens try to move the shifter from park to low then back to park if it starts right up it was the neutral safety switch. Good luck!

What kind of noise do you hear? Does the noise change when you give it gas? We need more details.

If it is a loud clicking or ticking noise, it could be sticking valve lifters. You would need to have it checked by a competent mechanic though.
Hey Jenna,

you stated that you recently had your car serviced..did the mechanic say anything about an unusual noise in the car?

did you mention this noise to them?

if the car is progressively getting louder it sounds like it might be an exhaust system problem...if your in doubt and would like to know...go to a Midas or other muffler type of place to have it checked out....most places will check your car for free

but ask about this first.

as far as your car not starting at the drive through...NO ONES car will start when it's in drive....it has to be in park first....so this is not a problem for you....it's normal.
with the noise, check your exhaust sytem from the manifold

back to (including) the tail pipe -- it don't take a very large

hole or leak to make a significant change in loudness.Other

than needing your idling tweaked, can't make any suggstions

on the mechanical problem.
