One more thing, make sure the engine is not frozen up....using a big socket and breaker bar on the front pulley, try turning the engine a little to makes sure it's free..

The battery might be dead, if it was still connected while the car sat, and you will need new tires.
I know this sounds stupid but make absolute certain there is a clean fresh supply of gas! I had a friend start a car that was parked for a year and since there was no gas the fuel pump burnt out. The Chevy dlr charged him $900 to replace it!
Fuel pump might be frozen, carbs or fuel injectors might be gunked up, theres a lot of things that might need attention. However do the things you were planning to do, get a can of ether while you are at the store and see if it starts up. Take it from there. You are on the right track.
I'd check on your battery and battery cables for corrosion. I'd also check your spark plug wires.. Fuel filter might not hurt, and i'd drain the old gas out and put new gas in it. Other than that i think you've got most of the essential things listed!
Make sure your brake lines have not rotted away as well as what the other guys have suggested.
